I know the R107 bay is actually pretty similar to the W115
The whole drive shaft and differential flange is 19mm to the right side. I'm not sure what they do with Right Hand Drive Cars. This becomes obvious when you look at the trans mount.

This might be a torque thing - it's better to put more weight on the RH side of the car if the engine is spinning towards the left (from the driver's point of view).

Has anyone thought about the possibility of a hydraulic brake booster instead of the vacuum booster?

I was first exposed to them on HMMWV's while in the Army, but apparently the larger (1.5 ton...) trucks are equipped with them, and some of the rock crawling crowd like to fit them to smaller vehicles for clearance issues.
