Update to an old thread:

Had a slow day in the shop so I finally addressed the belt tensioner in the wagon. Didn't replace it with a manual tensioner though, I updated it to the automatic tensioner from a later model 104. I put an engine in an S320 about a month ago and pilfered the a/c mounting bracket and automatic tensioner. It's not exactly a direct bolt in but it is do-able.

It starts with pulling the belt drive down by removing the fan pulley, water pump pulley, p/s pulley and pump bolts, and then yanking the old tensioner out. The manifold hose comes off the compressor and the compressor comes out. The crank pulley/damper comes out and the a/c mounting bracket can come out after dropping the sway bar down. On the bench it was obvious that the compressor doesn't line up all the holes on the new bracket. The upper two line up and a bracket was fabbed to hold the lower rear bolt. Now its was time to install the updated a/c bracket with the auto tensioner. It lines up to the blocks bolt holes no problemo as well as the three bolts in the timing cover. The p/s pump bracket gets modified by cutting off the part that the old tensioner rod adjusted against. The pump bolts up real easy after the mod. The compressor went in but is about 10 mm outboard from its original location. That required spacing the bracket for the fuel cooler/manifold hose outboard the same amount. I used some 17mm nuts to provide the spacing along with new longer bolts. My only other conflict was the hydraulic line, as my P/S is a tandem pump and the line gets secured at the upper a/c compressor bolt. I deleted the mount bracket and bent the line to fit. It's pretty old and will need replacing sooner rather than later so I'll fab something at that time. The rest was just reinstalling the pulleys and fitting the new belt. The new belt size is now 2523mm. It did take two people to get the P/S pulley on. The larger p/s pulley rests against the tensioner and you cant start the bolts ulness someone holds the tensioner off by a bit. It sure is nice though, just swinging it out of the way instead of dicking around with the adjuster.

So I know that this technicaly wasn't a "performance mod" but is still a pretty hardcore mod nonetheless

Here's a pic with the new style tensioner and bracket bolted to the 103 engine before everything else went back in to hide it.
