M120 Cooling system, Pipes and fittings? ....what are these...any idea?
Morning Ladies & Gents,
I need to bow to someone with greater knowledge than my own with respect to what these pipes are as I have no idea......see picture (its a very very old picture). The picture shows the engine (gearbox end), with a number of spouts (see red arrows). I believe the top pipe to be a heater matrix pipe and I have planned to use this a header tank pipe, but I have no idea what the small spouts below are (it`s a Tee piece) with either end being around 20mm. My current cooling system is as follow: Rad outlet to engine inlet (Front of engine by crank) - engine outlet (Front of engine "Top") - to electric water pump - to rad inlet. Filled by heater matrix hose in picture. Header tank to expansion tank. That should work right?..... only thing I need to do is blank off extraneous pipes....aka the picture above....want to make sure these are not anything vital. Any help would be appreciated. |

they prolly are for the matrix as well unless the m120's twin throtlles had water run thru their casings for thermal control.

Strange....Why would a matrix have more than one inlet & outlet? .... Either way I can just block them off then ? |

Outlets from the two heads are connected together by short rubber hose and top of the T goes to the heater core.

Where is the small rubber hose connecting the two heads? Is that the top pipe in the picture.... And not a ac or heater piper as originally thought? And do you mean both T outlets go to the heater? Thanks |

Thanks very much for the picture, it does help, so now there is nothing to stop me connecting my header tank to the heater pipe and using this to fill the system as it is my highest point (Ironically I don`t actually have a heater) to the "top of the tee" and blocking off the smaller Tee below if required.
Between the pictures posted by Roncallo, you and I, the oulet configurations are all different.....typical eh. Thanks again |

Please excuse me for going O.T. for just a moment, but that looks like a T5 trans in the picture at the beginning of this thread. Please say it ain't so! While I love T5s as much as the next guy, I'm afraid a T5, even a "built" one, is no match for an M120!
Regards, Eric

Remember muscle cars still use them for high horsepower applications such as the viper .... Just a case of the correct component selection for the job..... Straight cut gears, case hardening etc I can always upgrade for a T56 |

The Viper has ALWAYS used the T56, from day one. It was in fact the first car to use the T56.
Your car looks like it is going to be on the light side of the weight scale though, so that should help with transmission life (as well as the rest of the power-train components). Regards, Eric

StuartBJ did you get this sorted. I see no problem in connecting that hose right to the header tank. That's the way mine is except I also have a heater core in there as well. My header tank also has a hose running to the bottom of the radiator as well as a purge vent line running to the top of the thermostat housing (highest point) and a cap vent line running to the overflow tank.
In the attached picture of my tank that hose you speak of goes to the side brass fitting on my tank. The radiator goes to the bottom larger fitting. Thermostat hosing goes to the top brass fitting. Overflow goes to the top aluminum fitting on the cap. M120 into 560SL (With Pictures!)

Hi John, Yes I have sorted it now, really appreciate the email you sent. I've connected up to the header tank with a 20mm to 16mm reducer and my header tank feeds in to an over flow reservoir and also in to the radiator (hot side)...... Almost there Slightly off topic, when you pulled off your oil filter housing (Ive looked through your build threads).....and you had removed all the Allan and hex bolts was it still a bugger to pry off by chance? My header tank |
