Not quite...just diagnosis to confirm I've warped my brake rotors. After a long drive this weekend to the track consisting of sustained high speed runs (~140-150mph) with several 'exciting' braking events plus 2 x ~10 lap runs around the track, I think my rotors finally availed of the early retirement program. The drive home was rather exciting...moderate to heavy braking produced a lot of pedal pulses...and it wasn't ABS.
I've replaced my brake fluids with Motul RBF 600 though and experienced ZERO brake fade despite prolonged lapping at the track (say, 30-40 minutes at a go). I'm crossing my fingers it's nothing more than pad material accumulation at the rotors but I don't think I'm gonna be that lucky this time around. Btw, do you have pricing on the Movit brakes? The SL600 upgrade looks like it's gonna cost upwards of $2500 which opens the floor to other candidates...

I am DROOLING over some Movit or Porsche 993 brakes!!!
I am awaiting a quote from Zim Gwee @ Topline Automobile, in Burlingame, California (I met him at Benzsport Autofest 2002, this past Sunday, in San Jose). I will forward his reply to you, ASAP. FYI - Movit's pricing will DROP after January... according to the Northern California sales representative, Steve D'Gerolamo (ultgar@earthlink.net) . He wrote me (quote): "If you want a cheaper price, wait until early next year when Movit has their own calipers and rotors in production... kit pricing will fall when they don't have to source components through Porsche. - SD" Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!!!!!!!! Excellent news!
Would you know if they would fit 17" rims? Track tires are only available in these parts for my 17" wheels so it's quite important that my brakes would fit. I was also looking at StopTech who seem to know their stuff. They engineer brake kits taking into consideration the entire vehicles brake system as against slapping on bigger brakes that would fit the application. Pretty thorough. Unfortunately they haven't seen enough demand from the E500/500E/SL500/SL600 owners to justify production. You might wanna check em out. www.stoptech.com. They have a pretty good tech section too... I have with me right now a Brembo Ferrari F40 kit including 4 piston calipers, rotors, hoses and several sets of unused brake pads. You know of anyone who can convert these for E500/500E duty? I think most of the mods to it would center around the hat and the hangers. That would be sweet as well...

I am almost CERTAIN you will need 18" wheels (or larger) to accommodate any vendor's HUGE brakes, unfortunately. StopTech gave me the thumbs-down, too, about 3 months ago. I do know people who could mod/fit your Ferrari Brembo's; unfortunately, that would be a HUGE project with a HUGE budget... heh-heh... like almost everything we love to do... |

I spoke with Performance Chip Group in Australia, and according to them, even though some MB's have knock sensors, if the reference resistor is too "hot", the computers can't retard timing enough to keep it from knocking.
Hence the reason they're called a "reference" resistor. Ryan mentioned going up in SMALL increments so that your range for knock retardation is sufficient. He doesn't recommend taking it out completely. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E Last edited by ke6dcj; 12-06-2002 at 02:42 AM. |

The Euro EPC shows the standard EZL trim plug is 015-545-67-28 for catalyst cars, and the same one is used for USA cars. There is a different trim plug for non-catalyst cars, part number 015-545-71-28. Finally, for the 129.067 I found a third trim plug, 015-545-68-28, for "code 828/625", whatever that is. Looking up that part number in the USA EPC shows that part was used on SA 77082, which is, you guessed it, "AMG Engine Parts M119". The #68 plug is on the USA price list (about $15), but the #71 appears to be a Euro only part (but it is available in Germany).
Any guinea pigs out there? (oink! oink!) 015-545-71-28 = Euro non-catalyst 015-545-68-28 = AMG M119 (unknown models) 015-545-67-28 = Euro & USA catalyst Side question: Would peak power be available with race gas (94-100 octane unleaded), and the trim plug simply removed? |

You guys are getting on the right track.
I know for a fact that only removing the resistor and not replacing it (on 119 engines) will not gain any power in fact it will loose power. In order to gain power you will need to get a resistor with the correct resistance for your fuel needs. I to have a 119 powered car and would like to find all the power I can. So I have looked up the specs at work and could not yet find the resistance values for other countries, but I did find out that if the resistor is not there or it is open the ignition computer goes to something like 20 deg retard or basically full retard. The reason for this is that if the computer does not see this reference resistor then it will not know what kind of fuel it is running so it basically goes to safe mode. I am sure some of you know this as well, but if a company tries to sell you a chip and says in anyway that it effects timing (on early 119 engines) they are lying, our cars have a separate fuel and ignition computers, so if they send you a chip for the fuel comp and say it will effect timing they are lying.

Subman is 100% correct. My limited investigation shows that USA cars came with the resistor that enables the most aggressive timing advance curve available. It doesn't look like we can get anything else from the stock EZL in the USA.
