this thread is getting lame.

I know the V8 engine in the E55 and the BMW 540i would wipe that Civic off the map...

I think this thread is getting mindless already. Bobby is really showing his age & mentality.

or he is just doing this because he is lonely or has nothing better to do......

the funniest thing is that ELAU posted all of this moron's previous posts/threads...and it shows what a hypocrite and how immature this boy truly is...
sad and pathetic.

stick to the civic child...it suits you better, but remember to wear your seat belt, and when you blow your little 4 banger and need to spend 2,600.00 to get it repaired/replaced...
cie la vie...

p.s.

fry's has a deal on DIY neon underbody kits...

HOW LAME does one have to be to want to have neon underlights on a benz? hahahahahaha you are a kid!!!

Now I can certainly relate to that!! Mine has been a money pit of unfulfilled expectations since I bought it. How many times have I wished I'd never seen it. By far the worst vehicle investment I have ever made!! I can also relate to the Honda, heck, I have an Accord as my daily driver. If it weren't for the sprited, agile, dependable and virtually repair free Honda, I would have to walk to work or buy something else! I have and will bash Mercedes for all it's weak points whenever I am asked or when confronted by some MB lover who on blind faith thinks that MB is the only car in the world.
But; I can't say my Honda or anything else for that matter is a better car than a Mercedes. I got a bad one, so unlucky me. Compare a Mercedes to a Mustang?? Worlds apart. A Camaro?? No way! The 300 E is a rock solid tank for sure but if I were 19 I probably wouldn't give it second look.
So what did this thread accomplish? Somebody gave an opinion and got flamed? That ain't anything new! He caused a knee-jerk reaction that resulted in hostility from us normally reserved MB owners. The "parting shot", maybe, but remember, he only dogged the 300e and in his mind may have just been returned to his youth by the Honda. But he should have wished us well and bowed out as an MB owner and forum member. Somewhere down the road he may have to eat crow, and crow doesn't taste good. I know!

Good question. Prompted by ELAU's list, I went back and reviewed the various postings by Bobby 300E.

By the end, I had a picture of a young kid, enthused at first, with only the sky as the limit for plans for his 300E. It was evident that he didn't much care for the mundane maintenance that would be required of any car, never mind any Mercedes. One by one, the ideas he had fell, as he realized the magnitude of the job ahead.

At this point in his life, the Mercedes was destined to disappoint him. Who knows what the future will hold for him, although I don't get the sense he will ever be a used Mercedes enthusiast. This was undoubtedly a bitter experience for him.

I think all of us at times wonder if it's worth it to put the time in on our cars...I may be new to the Mercedes, but I certainly went through these issues with previous cars I owned. My E-type Jag gave me the ultimate lesson in the need for regular maintenance. Work on my Jag was like the news...you could count on needing it at 10 minutes past the hour, and in between whenever something happened.

But that fact that there are so many of us here that post regularly suggests that there is a common reward that we can perceive. For me, just driving down the road, rock solid, stable, not floating, but effortless, the thunk of the doors, the way the sun reflects of one of the Bruno Sacco lines...

It all comes together to work for me.

Cap'n have you considered those neon lights that mount underneath the car for the 300 ? I hear that the gals around McRae and Soperton (my home town) really like that kinda stuff on a Sat night . As for picking up chicks why in the world would I want to do that? I already have one that helps in disposing of every bit of my disposible income . I sure don't need to attract another one.

I think it was kinda not in line for Bobby to come on here and speak out like he did but he did and everyone that wanted to respond has.

I like all cars - I have owned an E320 and currently own a 300D and 300TD and am looking at picking up a 240D with manual transmission. We have had a Honda in the family since 1987 (more than that if you count the motocycles) and I thoroughly enjoy going to the NOPI events. I have liked all of our cars for different reasons. Right now my favorite is the 300TD. I feel that a Honda/Mazda, etc.. will provide as reliable a service as a MB as long as it is taken care of. The KICKER is that NONE of the Hondas/Mazdas provide the driving "FEEL" that the MB does if you know what I mean (I can't speak for anything newer than the 1995 E320 because I have never driven a MB newer than that for any length of time). There is something about it that I can't really put in words. An example, I redid a 1983 240D with an automatic. During the summer I let my neice (16 - her first car) drive it. Well, the neice told my sister (her mom) that she did not want to go the Honda/Mazda/Toyota route after driving the W123 so I ended up selling it to her. It may be slow but it has that MB "feel". The first MB I ever drove was a 1959 220S and I'll swear - it had the same MB "feel" as the W123/W124 cars of today. I doubt I will ever own a MB newer than about 1985 just because I really don't want all that "technology" stuff. That puts me in a pickle because it makes me want to purchase every "really nice" W123 that comes along because I don't know what I would ever replace it with although I do joke with the wife that when I get too old to enjoy turning wrenches on them I am going to go purchase a Honda. Each to their on ya'll.

Let me know when you get those neons mounted and I will come cruise with you Stephen - even if it is in "limp home" mode. Those gals will never know .

oh yea - one other thing - when the cylinder head is off they all look alike

i'm opting for blue neon lights under the driver and pass sides as well as rear and front, i'm also thinking of modifying the hood to play "Low Rider" and flash a spot light from my 4 inch mid hood suspended disco ball...of course the spot will be in blue...
HEY GUYS WHAT ABOUT SOME HYDRAULICS? YEAH WE CAN THROW SOME SWITCHES INTO OUR 300'S THEN WE'D REALLY PICK UP CHICKS!!!...NEXT UP...
custom pinstripping, some airbrush work on the hood of a woman dressed like XENA, slaying a dragon, and some dayton rims!!!

woo hoo....

NOT!!!!

We have a mix of both rice and saurbraten in this household, have for many years now, and I'm happy with that.

Japanese and German manufacturers have different engineering philosophies and approaches, not just nationally, but within firms.

BMW and Benz think differently, as do Honda and Toyota.

There are excellent Japanese cars and superb German ones; there are certain lemons from both as well. First year ML320? Ugh. Civic del Sol? Likewise.

There's an Integra GSR out in the driveway next to the 500E. Very much a study in contrasts.

When I switch to the Teg, I'm amazed at how light and agile it is. I'm also amazed at how effing cramped it is for a 185-cm male. My neck hurts after an hour's ride. No headroom problem in the 500E.

I marvel at the efficiency of the little VTEC mill. And cringe at how INCREDIBLY intrusive its sound is when it's revved up onto the second cam profile. The 500E is like a proper gentleman's gentleman, asking quietly, "Would you care to go fast now, sir?"

The 500E is incredibly inefficient on fuel compared to the GSR. But it carries four adult passengers in comfort, with their luggage, for continental distances, with no hassles. Or, the GSR has a huge hatch for moving things like houseplants -- and no fine leathers to mess up with planting soil.

Last note, this one unpleasant. After the 500E meet this weekend in San Rafael, later on in the nighttime, I was out driving on the coast highway. Heavy fog, wet road surface.

Noticed flashing police lights ahead, a couple of vehicles in queue waiting to be waved past. When it was my turn, I got a quick look at the smashed car in between the law enforcement. Ricer car, a current-generation Civic. Could not tell in two seconds in the dark and fog whether it was a sport model, but it had the inevitable riceboy stickers (which even unmodified economy models of Civic are known to carry).

It was crunched hard, but there was no second vehicle in sight. Huh? Then I realized what had happened. They'd whacked a pedestrian who had been trying to sprint across the roadway.

Damn. Bad news. Poor guy.

I have no idea how fast the Civ was travelling, but I was shocked at how much damage had been done to it (appeared undriveable) from hitting a nonfixed, human obstacle. I've hit a deer at highway speeds before -- roughly comparable to a man -- while in a big old Yank tank, and it slightly bunged the grille.

Lesson of the day: mass matters.

I was very, very happy for the rest of the dark wet drive home to be in the 500E.

Don't mean to egg this thing on....but calling a Honda Civic SI a "SPORTS CAR" is a disgrace altogether. Just b/c it can do a 0-60 is 7.5 seconds (big deal) doesn't mean it is a sports car. If you want sports car.....get a Toyota Supra, 300ZX, NSX, Porsche, etc......not a Civic. Sure, you can make your Civic go faster and redo the suspension and tires and strip the interior to make it go around a track faster, but then do you really have a Honda Civic still? It's all on how you percieve things I guess....

The ability to go fast in a straight line is not what sport car is about. It is drag racing. A Civic is neither a sport car nor a drag racer. A sport car can handle twists and turns just as well as straight line.

Kids nowadays driving those souped up Civic never have the experience of what street drag racing is all about because it had long since outlawed. They think going from one red light to the next faster is a sport. I remember those long ago Friday and Saturday nights with the GTO, Camaro SS, Charger with a mix of street rods and Bel Airs. Now that was some fun

No need for neons, I just unplug the side marker lamps and let them dangle under the car! Great effect when they sway as the car turns! Gotta run, the paint stripper on the Folgers coffee can should be about ready to wipe off, then I'll have my new exhaust tip!! And about that "check engine" light, we'll just tell the chicks it means studs on board !!
