Dear members,

I have a used 1992 500E with 75,000km on mileage and been having some problems lately.

whenever I start the engine and after it reaches normal temperature I notice a knocking effect,sort of rough idle but comes and goes! .I also smell fumes around the car and inside,I have checked around the exhaust pipe and there is alot of black powedery stuff there.I have checked the engine Oil and its within limits,Oil pressure gauge shows normal also.

please help as I am very frustrated!!!

Have the distributor caps & rotors been replaced? Plugs? I'd start there, as they are maintenance items and are known to wear out in 50-60k miles.

That done, check in & let us know. As to the black soot, mine has always kept the exhaust tips a bit black (mine are polished, butget blackened within 50 miles of use), but I believe it's normal

I would agree with Michael regarding the distributor cap/rotor. I've heard they wear every 30K miles so it might very well be over due. You might also want to look at your plugs while your in their to determine if any abnormal wear exhists.

As far as the black around the exhaust tip I've got this on mine as well and after a recent California smog inspection they stated that the car is perfectly clean, so I have to assume this is normal.
