Excuse me, but where is the "putdown"? The 500E is never mentioned, let alone put down.

Actually, its more like the 500E was ignored as being a Porsche 4-door sedan.

I tried to join a Porsche team once at a track day in Las Vegas. They wouldn't buy it.

Tom, below is the heading of the Forbes article

"Vehicle of the Week
First--And Only--Porsche Sedan"

Your car ONLY looks like a Mercedes version W124.

Make no mistake about it though - it is more a Porsche than it is a Benz.

I read somewhere that there are some 2-4000 parts in the 500 E 500 that are different than it's siblings of the same model year. I can assure you that the frugal folks at MB didn't make that happen - it was the folks at the Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen where your car was built on a wheeled pallet and moved by hand from station to station as the Porsche craftsmen/women assembled it. It may not have been the first Porsche sedan but it is a Porsche sedan none-the-less.

Funny, my "Porsche" says "Mercedes" all over it, right down to the hose clamps with three pointed stars on them.

Does the 500E share a Porsche heritage? Yes. Is it a Porsche? No.

Frankly, I think new Mini owners have a better claim to driving a BMW than we have to driving a Porsche.

to each his/her own...

It's more of a matter of attention to detail, in my opinion.

For those to whom few (if any) other vehicles matter more than the 500E/E500, Forbes' oversight is worthy of good-natured correction/constructive criticism.

ENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGH!

In the model years 1991 through 1995, Porsche made a 4 door sedan and shipped approximately 1500 of them to the US. It is disguised as a Mercedes-Benz 124 E class. However, amongst it's current owners here in the states and throughout the world, it is known as a Porsche/Ferrari Killer. AND! It came stock that way straight from Porsche' Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen.

The 500E / E500 may not have been the first Porsche Sedan but it was/is a well known, much respected and relatively easy-to-care-for Porsche engineered Sedan."

John - The 500E did not come off the MB assembly line at Sindelfingen as did all other W124s. It began it's life at a Porsche factory where it was hand built by Porsche engineers. MB only supplied some of the parts and dipped and painted it. Porsche did all the rest. It may not look like a Porsche but if you park it next to a 400E or E420 and really look closely, you will easily decide that it is not a Mercedes either.

Hi Tom, John, Scott, Dean, Norman and all!

.....anyone locate something/ anything branded "Porsche" in or on their 500e/e500?

I did- - take a peek inside your trunk, in the battery wheel well (r-side behind the rear wheel), below/underneath the fender's grey carpeting...pull it up and take a gander

I spied a sticker w/ "Porsche"- - but, mine appeared to have the glue nearly dried out of it so when I pulled up the carpet it fell to down the right side of the battery

Hate to admit it, but I was doing an annal-retentive cleaning targeting that area, pulled out the battery, battery tray, lifted the carpet to mosey around and the rest is history.

Anyone else find it?

Best regards
-fad

Thanks, Tom.

I looked really closely at the silver 500E that sits in my driveway when I am at home. It has a three pointed star on the hood and looks a lot like a Mercedes!
