anyone recognize this manifold/ header?
Is it similar to a Euro M117 header or did AMG fabricate a different design?

Looks like the same header for M119 500E, which is based upon the M117 block.

Stainless headers or ceramic coating?
Thanks for the reply Neil, I've been out of range with the holidays and all.
I would think the M119 would require a different exhaust manifold what with the 32v head having twice the 'ins and outs.' I will know once I have them off if they are special AMG headers,119 manifolds or a euro 117 configuration (assuming I can find any sort of numbers on them). The reason for my question is that most the cosmetics and the overall condition of the cast iron manifolds gave me the bug to either ceramic coat/ jet hot them or seek a stainless alternative. An added benefit would be to bring down the underhood temp a bit. The complicated part is that even if a stainless alternative were available for a 117 engine (jack's car on mbcoupes.com for example) it may not fit the confines of the 124 body as easily as it does the 126. |

removed the headers today...
it seems AMG did alot of work to make these fit. Was next to a beautifully restored 560SEC in the shop today. The headers on the SEC M117 exit towards the rear of the engine about level with the ports. It seems AMG had to reshape the manifold on the 124 to exit downwards due to the tighter confines of the engine bay.
Having the headers off we also noticed quite a bit of "extrude honing" had been done to increase the diameter of the manifold. The W119 head has diamond shaped ports as opposed to the more "D" shaped ports on the M117 heads, so a 500E to M117 swap wouldn't work. here's a nice set of customs on a euro M117 in a 560SEC from mbcoupes.com: |
