500E (W124) Catalytic Converter

I've been reading up on the topic of cat's gone bad herein and suspect mine is up to no good as it rattles profusely. I suspect that the performance chip may be the culprit, anyone else have a bad experience chipping their car, or have to repace cat recently?

If it's rattling, see if it's just the heat shield(s)

Thanks, but no, it's definitely the cat.

I would check to see if your heat shield is loose.

Save your money.

If your cat was really bad you'd have a serious reduction in power.

My cats in my 92 400E rattle too. Actually, its just one side. I do have a chip. But Ive also had a thermostat that was stuck open and its been very cold here in NY. So It could be from when it was getting dumped with fuel.

What should I DO? Replace them? I really dont want to drop over a Grand to do this. Besides waste and pollution, is there any adverse effects to the engine by bypassing them? I wouldnt think so, since the O2 sensor in before them

Thoughts are appreciated.

My mech. told me that the Cat does develop cold spots when it runs rich, like with a chip, I also have a chip (not a 500E tho...) and that probably is whats done it. I didnt replace mine, it just took longer to warm it up in order to pass emmissions, not a probem after that, I got 2 years till smog again.

As for taking the cat out, I just asked a 25 year mech. about that and apparently it doesnt have any adverse effect, except as you said pollution and junk, but it should be a lot louder too.
