No sealant and yes you too get the pleasure of pulling the whole A/C bracket off.
I didn't unhooh anything on the compressor, just slid the whole assembly toward the right wheel well to get access.

I did the gasket today and the old one though...

I did the gasket today and the old one though barely detectable had the metal towards the manafold. Also, It looked like it wouldn't go any other way.

One side looks like that but the otherside of the gasket is metal covered. I was going to GUESS that the all metal side went against the ehxaust manafold.

My '77 240D blew out #4 ehxaust manafold gaskt. I know what I need to do to replace it BUT.... The replacement gasket is METAL on one side and just gasket material on the other. Which side goes...
