I just swapped an 1985 speedo into my Bride's 84...

I just swapped an 1985 speedo into my Bride's 84 300D to display the correct speed after changing the diffy out. Externally, the speedos looked identical, the only difference was the gearing.

'85 W123s all have mechanical speedos and 2.88 diffys. At least, all three of mine do.
