Replaced Idle Control Valve and Hoses

A few weeks after my previous note (above), I replaced the idle control valve and both hoses and the problem was solved.

Reply to SPTT - I checked and I do not have the air intake temperature sensor. There is a plug where it should be. M-B must have added it after 1986. Also, I see where you bought a new EHA.

Thanks, SPTT. I believe I do have a temperature sensor on the air intake. I will check it too. Did you buy a new EHA unit or used?

Thanks.

Question 300E Cold Start Blues

My 1986 300E has a cold start problem like many I've read about in this forum. First start in the morning (or after it sits a few hours) is difficult. I can start it only by holding my foot down on...

Arrived at 270k

I finally hit 270k miles. I just performed the following work:
1. Resealed the upper camshaft cover. The DIY article on this site was a huge help. As noted in the article, I used Hylomar sealant...

Checked oil use rate

It seems that I'm using a quart of oil every 600 miles -- not 300-400 like I said in my first post. I checked it by:
1. Reset the trip odometer when the low oil light first comes on.
2. Add a...

Front struts and differential

1. Front struts - I used a second jack (instead of the spring compressor). It worked fine. All you need to do is raise it slightly--not enough to compress it. The best resource is the W124 Front...

Replaced front struts and steering damper

Yesterday, I replaced the original front struts and the steering damper. The steering damper was shot and easy to replace. The front struts were straightforward, but I'm still sore from breaking...

Hand Pump

I think you misunderstood. I did the differential refill and the rear shocks at the same time. You have to remove the trunk lining to get at the top of the shocks. While everything was out, I used...

1986 300E Differential & Rear Shocks

I completed two of the jobs yesterday:
1. Differential drain and refill. To my knowledge, this was the first time. I did not use a jack. I used the 13mm x 14mm Mercedes wrench that has the 14 mm...

270k 300E

In response to a few of the comments and questions, I am not the original owner. I bought the car with 50k on it from the original owner in early 1990. He had all of the receipts and had it...

Engine Leaks

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go ahead with the stem seals and the upper front timing chain cover reseal. Both have been done before, but that was many years ago. It is worth a try; the...

Thanks, but.........

I appreciate your opinion on the maintenance items, but I plan on keeping the car. It is midnight blue (original factory paint that takes a nice wax) and the interior is almost perfect. Everything...

Thanks for the suggestions

Thanks for all the suggestions. Over the years, many (not all!) of the items mentioned have been regularly maintained or replaced. Early on, the dealer did much of the more difficult work, but I...

300E High Mileage - Transmission

Yes, I do need to do that too. It has been quite awhile, probably back at 210,000. The fluid appears okay because of the slight seal leak, but the filter will need changing.

1986 300E High Mileage Maintenance

My 1986 300E is approaching 270,000 miles and I am looking for some recommendations. My wife and I love the car; I've done much of the maintenance for the last 20 years. The car runs well, but it...
