Ok - silly me. Checked power at the receiver connector, lo and behold, no 12VDC on either the ignition or illumination pins (12VDC on the constant pin is there). Checked each fuse that mentioned...

Looks like Gretel (our 1991 300TE 4Matic) has dribbled on her stereo receiver at some point in the past.

Symptom is an E2 error code (no receiver found). Pulled the receiver, and found that one...
