FWIW the dealer claims that a visual inspection IS reliable and that what they'd be looking for are hairline cracks that could be indicative of something bad going on underneath.

As I've read a bunch, I've been unclear as to how conclusive a visual inspection can be. As I say, my auto body guy didn't seem to be concerned when he looked at the 98 and he's pretty well-versed...
