The '82 schematic for the 300D (US version) shows that the window relay is actuated when the key switch is in the "run" or "start" position. No other condition will power the windows.

"Off" is what the engine normally is when the key is in the "accessory" position.

Check your fuses. I will bet you have poor continuity on one of them. A problem with the ignition switch wiring would affect all windows; same with the relay.

So you have to pull over and move the key to the accessory position in order to operate half of your windows? For some reason, that just doesn't sound like Mercedes engineering.

It would be pretty easy to install a switchable jumper around the window relay, then you could operate the windows independent of the key position. In fact, I am not sure that permanantly jumpering...

Don't listen to your husband. Not this time, at least. The window relay sticking "on" is the only reasonable cause for your problem that I can see. The "working" side of the relay is hot at all...
