When my 1983 300D is hot, the fan stops immediately when the engine stops turning. There is no delay at all. You can actually see the fan jerk to a stop like the engine does during the last second...

Can you clarify what you mean about the fan stopping or spinning when you shut the engine off? If you get the engine hot (about 100 should do it) and have someone turn the engine off...

If the cap is leaking, usually it expels coolant...

If the cap is leaking, usually it expels coolant right after you turn the engine off after a hot run. Again, based upon my experience, I've never seen a cap cause a problem unless you saw coolant...
