This is totally a guess, but I think 65-70 mph...

This is totally a guess, but I think 65-70 mph could be well above the best economy speed for a 240D. What RPM are you turning at 70 mph?

That much weight in the trunk will make the car drive like a pig. I ended up moving as much as I could to the back seat. That is just too much weight too far...
