another thought I had is the weight is lowering the "level" of your fuel tank, and slightly lowering your fuel pressure. it is "possible" that your getting better mileage is due to the lower fuel...

don't forget that the extra weight will help your car coast on the downhill sections of the drive.
amazing how much extra mileage you can get with gravity as the fuel!
