My thought is that if the replacement was performed at a Mercedes Benz dealership, and was characterized there as a "warranty" or "recall" job, (as some were) then a MB Net (Vehicle Master Inquiry)...

From the pictures and the description of the car, it sounds like a really really nice one. Those '86-'87 SDL sedans are excellent motors, almost as good as the 1981-85 SD cast iron blocks.
