Why not? Lye will definitely brighten Aluminum up, just neutralize it all afterwards, and coat it quickly to deal with oxidation. Don't use Lye of HF on shiny Aluminum though, unless you intend to...

If you want it to shine again, you'll have to take it off and polish it. Spray some WD, or some oil on it to stop the oxidation. There is going to by lye left over there, it will oxidize further on...
