EARLY ignition tumbler replacement.
My ignition is failing to turn occasionally so it seems like it is time for a new tumbler. I did this procedure in my now sold '79 240D (the whole bit with the paperclip) but in my current early '79 240D the tumbler assembly is different; The "face" of the tumbler is smaller and most importantly there is no hole to poke with a paperclip to release the bezel. How do I get the tumbler out?

Tumbler
Did this last year. Need to pull off the round silver ring piece carefully. Then get a thin coat hanger and bend the tip curved to pull off the black cover plastic piece. Inserti in the back and it snaps off pretty easy.
The tubler has a little notch that sticks out in the rear about 1 inch or so behind wear the key goes in. I think you have to put it in the #1 posistion with the key (radio prosition) and get a slightly curved tip coat hanger in there, press the nobber in and pull out. Double check MB manual (not handy to me now) but it is covered in the 123 Chassis steering section. Old style tumbler. Kind of a pain to do but easy access and you do not have to pull instrument panel. Regards Tom |
