1995 E320 EGR Problem!!! - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I have taken my 1995 W124 E320 to my mechanic three times now due to my check engine light coming on with the EGR inoperative code. When he hooks it up to his reader, he gets the EGR flow code. The first time he cleaning out the EGR inlet pipe with a speedometer cable and brake cleaner. The second time he cleaned out the exaust manifold as there was debris. The third time he removed the EGR solenoid and cleaned off some corrosion. After every repair, the Check Engine light came back on after about 1-2 weeks. I am not sure if the wiring harness has been replaced yet. I bought the car with 197K miles in 2002. Please advise as to what should be my next course of action. Thanks.

I would try installing a new pipe from the egr to the intake. If I remember correctly, there was a change in the design which was supposed to reduce the build up at the intake end.

I state this from experience. My 95E320 did exactly what you describe. I personally cleaned the egr tube, pulled the egr and manually tested for operation. Nothing wrong. What was wrong was that the vacuum line under the front cover had become disconnected....check it out.

Very common on 104 eng. The original line is plastic and they are prone to drying out and cracking. This line is Common vac feed for both egr and air pump SOVs and the best fix is to replace with a good rubber line.
Although both egr tube blockage and egr valve upgrade part are also common egr code faults on these , the most overlooked and easiest check is this line ... from there one can do a simple hand vac test at the vac line at the egr to test for egr opening/flow. Hand vac will cause rough idle when applied. If not , egr is not opening or tube is blocked...

Thanks all!!! I'll give my mechanic a copy of this thread. However, when I took a look at the vacuum tube, it looks like it is already rubber.

is the egr on this engine?

i just bought my car the other day and the check engine light came on while driving it back from Phoenix. from the forum i learned how to count the led flashes: there are 5, which supposedly indicate a problem with the egr.

The ID of the EGR tube is about 3/4", cleaning 1/16" with a speedo cable WON'T get the job done! IF you want to code to go away then REPLACE the tube! Takes about 2.5-3 hrs & the parts run about $160. Otherwise learn to live with the light!

IF it was a vacuum hose problem the light would come on after EACH drive cycle.

Well,
On your chassis , the egr valve is at the rear end of the exhaust manifold , on the passenger side. The pipe you refer to goes from this EGR valve , across the back side of the engine , over to the drivers side intake port .
This is the pipe that usually plugs up, but the problem can also be a sticking EGR valve.
There was a design change on this part to remedy sticking valve...

On my 1992 300SE, I replaced the EGR pipe and in doing so loosened the brass pipe fitting that goes in between the EGR pipe and the Intake manifold. It was plugged solid with oily carbon. This was during a valve job so I am not anticipating it happening anytime soon, but I will check it periodically in the future.
