What coolant to use?

Alright, so I've been told and have read so many different things on this subject, and I may be opening a major can of worms here, but here it goes.

What type of coolant should be used in my 83 240D?

Some say prestone, some say there is a specific MB coolant formulated to not corrode the cooling system internals, some say don't worry, any coolant is fine. What is the deal? This issue seems more inconclusive than engine oils.
