That's not funny. I literally just finished cleaning up from doing this job. The carbon stacks on the one that came out were about 2mm tall. Its not hard to change, though. Very nice write-up, yet again.

Cool write-up as always. Thanks!

What's your recommendation for an inspection interval?

Question. What if our car has the pre-his-toric "Box type" regulator on the outside of the alternator? How does one check/change those? My car has one, our '83 has the newer style (entire alternator died 2 years ago so the whole thing was replaced, it froze and smoked the belts. ) Anywho, my car has had a "World Class Remanufactured" Alternator on it since I got the car (40k ago) and its never had any issues so far, runs 14v when driving once the glow system shuts down. Would I be better off trashing the whole alternator when it finally dies, or paying the extra $$ and putting the old style regulator on it. Mainly I am just curious. If it dies I'd like to put at least an 80Amp one on it, preferably the 115 or 120 from a SAAB though.

Pictorial should include working on the old style regulators too.

Also, the external one is $42. The newer kind is only $23 for the german one and $28 for the Bosch Spanish one.

A question....

Another good job, Russell!

My 300DT (1985 California version) has a metal plate mounted on the rear of the alternator. My alternator has longer studs than the one in your pictorial and the plate mounts to them. It looks it a fairly easy task to remove (hopefully the topmost nut won't be unreachable!) but obviously must be removed before the regulator assembly will come out.

Is this another unique "feature" of the 1985s or did other years have it too? None of the alternator pictures that I've seen posted here have this plate. What is its purpose? Some kind of shield, I suppose, but against what? DIY regulator removal?

I also think its a "DIY Regulator Shield" someone could probably give you a MB official parts # if they have the MB electronic catalog thing....

That is a first for me. I have never seen such a shield on the MB alternators.

May I add one suggestion?

When I changed mine, on my Gasser (the diesel's just needs to be installed) I replaced the screws with SHCS, which allows you to use those nice ball-tipped allen wrenches. Makes the job far easier the 2nd time round.

Love your site, great source of articals and parts.
