300TD no power, installed to 86 Dodge P/U (question)
I installed a 1980 300TD to my 1986 Dodge P/U. It seems under powered. I am looking for advise to give engine more power, and things to check that may need attention.

What you have is probably about all there is to be had. A 617 without a turbo isn't very fast but its enough to keep up with the flow of traffic.

I'm assuming you installed just the engine?
Click on the diesel perfomance tuning forum above, lots of ways to spend time and money making a 617 belch black smoke and go faster.

Unfortunately, the engine you transferred only has 85 hp from the factory. It's definitely not sufficient to push a Dodge pickup around (about 4000 lb). You really can't get much more power from it, but check out threads regarding IP timing and valve adjustment to get the most you possibly can. ...........and, plan to drive with your foot on the floor...........just like all the gassers............ |

That's about the same weight as the big G-Wagon which had that engine. You'll have to gear it down and lower your top speed.

My first Cat diesel was an N/A, a 10.4liter N/A, ...
Changed the IP to a higher injection rate, more injection advance, nozzles with lower pop pressure, raised high-idle (max. RPM) speed, increased rack, ... got lots more power and more smoke. Power mods pre-date the turbo it's just dirtier.

Is the 617 another name for the 300TD,
I was told the 300TD put out 140 hp, with the turbo, that is why I figured it might pull the 4000 lbs. If the charge pump does not have enough pressure, could this lower the power?

But, if it came from an SD.........it might just have a turbo. If so, it has 123 hp........and it has many options for getting more power out of it. Check out the "diesel performance tuning" forum which is at the top of the diesel discussion. Many things you can do.........most of which cost a bit of money. |

I think there may be some confusion. A 1980 300TD is a Wagon. I believe you are saying you installed a 1980 Turbo engine, from a 300SD?
If so that engine has around 125 HP (new). You may not be getting power due to a plugged or disconencted ALDA line. It runs from the back of the exhaust manifold to the ALDA on top of the injection pump. Try a search for more info.

So I think with the right mods, his Dodge truck will probably be able to do at least 60 and get there within 25-30 seconds. Leonoo click here and start reading. BTW TD means touring diesel, not turbo diesel. That is MB speak for a station wagon. If you put an entire station wagon in your Dodge, it's gonna be slow. Now if you had a Cummins under the hood with the right mods, you wouldn't even feel that wagon in the back of your truck.

There is a pretty good reason Dodge chose a 5.9L Cummins with 400lb/ft of torque instead of a 3.0L engine with 180lb/ft of torque.
You can remove the fuel rack limiter and get about 15hp. To get any more than that will take a few thousand dollars in modifications. |
