Self-Canceling Signal Indicator Fix

Hello Peaches,

I have not posted in a while and I have new material to contribute and a few minutes to share. That nagging turn signal stalk that would not hold itself when I was signaling a turn finally got some love. Here is the procedure:

Remove rubber boot at steering column. The photo shows that the shape of the boot holds itself on, no clips or tabs that might break off.

Next, examine the working of the signal indicator to determine if right side or left side (or both) need attention.

Then, gently file the indented location checking frequently until the signal holds on its own. If you file too much the signal will get stuck, then it won't self-cancel.

This was about one-hours worth of labor, maybe two if you are snapping photographs.

Here are the pictures of the filing. Hope this helps. When I was looking for a fix, I found a helpful description. I am visual and photographs help me more than words.

Excellent!!

There is an old writeup on this by Mike Tangas in the archives, but it is so old that the pictures no longer work.

Ya know, you just can't please some people! I figured I'd finally get around to doing this fix and so I did.

I used a dremel tool with a round "ball" bit. Took about 15 minutes. 10 minutes on the first side because I had to hold the switch against the spring pressure to get the dremel in place, 2 minutes for the second side since the detent held the switch in place and about 3 minutes total for removal and installation. It's a lot easier if you slip the wiring connection loose from it's bracket on the underside of the dash.

Of course, I'd gotten so used to the "self-canceling" feature that now I find myself changing lanes and forgetting to turn the signal off. I've got to get back in the habit of just using a slight touch to activate the signals for lane changes. "Procedure not required or understood in the states of California, Florida and Nevada. Use of horn or hand gestures is the legal substitution"

From your sig, are you doing this on a W108?

Same trick works for the W114/W115.

BTDT.

It's a '73. They don't use blinker fluid. They use flasher crystals.

Hey Palagi,

I've found my way back to the Shop (at least until they decide to shift me back to the sucky shift I was on). I'll have to see if I can find the original pictures of the repair and get them up on the web again. Lost all of the old photo when my ISP went TU.

EDITED: to add ... Hi Bill!

Howdy Mike

Welcome back.

Guess you're not stationed at Frostbite Falls anymore.

Actually got back to sunny (read: warm) So Cal latter part of '06, but got a horrible shift. Leave the house at 0700 and get home around 2300. Not much time to do anything at all/ Just got switched to a more normal day shift and should have a hour or two to surf after my 80 mile commute home.

I think I like the 3,000 mile commute better for computer surfing.
