if all the plugs are getting 12v but not all of them are glowing than there is no other problem, its just bad glow plugs.
Let us know if you can find these locally, i want a set for my W115.

ream
Okay so if I replace these plugs, since its been years (at least 6 if not more) since the last plugs, I REALLY should ream these right?
Question is, is there anyone here in the Portland area that will let me borrow their reamer for a few hours? Even for a small fee? mark |

The reamer for the loop plug holes is different than the reamer for an engine with OE pencil plugs. Thread sizes are different, so you'll need someone with a loop style reamer.

Where do you get one of the GP reamers for these old cars? It seems like they are not sold (anymore)....
BTW I have a '76 so I attached a picture of the original set up so you can see if yours looks the same. The ground wire is the braided copper wire on the far left - the heavy "squiggly" wires (bus bars) are seen between the two plugs pictured. Also note the white insulators between the plug and the terminal nuts. Make sure the bus bars are not shorted against something else metal and all the insulators are in place. Also, did you check continuity of the dash indicator (salt shaker)? I can't give any advice on how to fix this system as I've never had to...but PM me if you need a copy of the glow plug troubleshooting pages from the MB manual - they explains the system VERY well.

Yes. The Glow Plug Reamer for the Loop Style Glow Plugs is expensive. I think you could do just a well with what ever Size Shot Gun Cleaning Brush that is slighlty oversized compared to the Glow Plug Hole. They have Bronze, Stainless Steel and Nylon (do not be fooled as the color the nylon to look like Bronze). I would pic one of the metal ones. After that use a Vacuum cleaner to suck out the Carbon; they have small Vacuum Cleaner adapters that people use to clean Computers. Or just make something. I am not so sure Carbon Build up has the same effect on the Loop Style or the updated ones as the Elements on both are better isolated from the Cylinder Head especially the up dated Pencil ones. On the newer Pencil Glow Plugs the Carbon builds up between the Glow Plug Hole and the the heating Element; over time making a ring of Carbon around it and connecting it to the Cylinder head.

found 'em!
Okay I found the Bosch plugs I need through a fella here who does some part time MB work, he has a distributor he goes through where he gets a discounted price....I got 'em all for $56 ($14 each), gonna pick 'em up tomorrow.
I'm still waiting to hear from him as to weather he has a reamer I can borrow or not....... mark in Portland PS. For the Portland folks, Halsey imports also told me they can get these retrofit plugs but for $17 each. |
