OM617 head gasket failure - pictures

Two customer tear-downs in one day.

Post# 1 pictures, I drained two gallons of coolant from the oil pan, head cracked on cylinder #2. #3. #4.
The cylinder head cavitation/metal erosion is impressive.

OK, I'll pull out the blown head from my 85TD, and I'll pull the head off the 93 D with a snapped chain for ya!

To quote a song, how long has this been going on? It appears to have been an issue for a long time! And, with all that coolant in the pan, surely this engine has lower end damage, as well.

Man, that's ugly.

Very seldom hear of cracked heads on 617's.

Maybe it was overheated?

roy tells me the majority of the damage to the head is due to PLASMA in the chambers from the cracks allowing water in during combustion...
that pitting is from CORROSION interaction with the iron in the plasmas of the water!
there is a history in the motor and it totally blew roy away.

The second head removed

Here are pictures of the second head removed.

The paint mark shows a huge erosion crater on cylinder three.

Note: This engine is scrap metal, all pistons and sleeves show pitting/scoring.

Six mile round trip, normal sounds, pulled in the driveway, sudden overwhelming burning oil odor.
Shutoff car, popped the hood, engine compartment soaked with oil.
Tried to re-start for a trip to the repair shop = click but no crank.
Jumped the battery from a running 300SD, three revolutions then total stop, wait five minutes and repeat.
Engine oil was two quarts low when it got to the shop.
Installed new battery, three revolutions then total stop, wait five minutes and repeat.
Starter replaced, three revolutions then total stop, wait five minutes and repeat.
I put it on the hoist preparing to drop the lower oil pan for inspection.
Pulled the oil drain plug roughly two gallons of coolant and six quarts of oil came out.

The issue was rather obvious at that point.

Further inspection showed most crankcase related seals where blown out by hydraulic pressure.

Make sure you grab the cam, cam towers, etc from your old head and put them on the w116 head. The newer heads differed with these parts to allow for more lift of the valves allowing the engine to breath better.
