firstly, i did use search for this issue, but found only bits and pieces from previous posts that did not clearly indicate how to remove the tray or list a firm part # for the replacement "tray".
i just got a 95 C-280 that has the 6-cassette tray below the head. i saw another similar MB that had a "tray" type compartment instead of the cassette rack. it had a sort of "rubbery" grip texture, and was a perfect replacement for the casssette rack. can anyone explain the steps or tricks to removing the cassette rack? i do not want to break any tabs or any other parts. does anyone have the part number of the plain open tray that i saw? i am sure it was a MB part as it was a perfect fit. it was black. thanks in advance for any help. - benton in atlanta |

This link tells how I removed mine - it also has links for buying replacement slots for the cassettes to hold CDs, or call Phil at Fastlane above and see if they can get the MB bin that goes into that slot. I have already installed the $12 bin so I will have to search to see if I can find it in my records.
Want a cubby bin to replace "pop-out" cassette holders

Found it! (Good old cradle-to-grave records!) The bin part number for my 98 C230 is 202-683-00-91, Tray, Console, $11.76. If you run into trouble on the installation, I will take a picture of the troublesome clips on the cassette tray mechanism that slow down removal (If I can remember how I did it, where the part is, etc

thanks for the info, especially the part # of the bin.
i had called 3 local dealers before knowing the actual #, and all 3 responded as if i had just landed on this planet. ie... "we dont know no nothing about no stinking bins." however, when presented an actual part #, they would be glad to order it for me. (ps- they quoted me $14) by the way, have you (or anyone else) added or added the "swing up/out" cupholder that fits the center console just aft of shifter? i am going tomorrow to try one at the dealer who quoted $41, not the dealer that quoted me $84! wow, what a difference! thanks again for any info. - benton in atlanta |
