Hey Harry, I watched this on E-Bay awhile back and almost bought it as insurance but in the end decided I couldn't afford it but I was going to get in touch with this guy to see if he still had it and would get rid of it cheaper! But heck I just wanted it and it looks like you need it so you could give this guy a try and see what he'll do. Even at twice his price its probably still cheaper than anywhere else. Good Luck!

I was tempted to buy this injector pump also. I emailed him for additional information and the copy of the original receipt. He never returned emails and I just felt that something was fishy about htis offer. I would approach this carefully and get all the info you can.

I bought it Billybob
I bought the pump you told me about on Ebay, thanks.
I had already ordered one from Silver Star when I got your lead and I now have two;-). The used one ran great but I wanted the Bosch rebuild on the car so I switched out. I am on my third or forth day trying to get it to feed more than three cylinders. I keep getting good suggestions to try, but I think tomorrow will be my last day. The seller has assured me with both email and on the phone that he will take it back and refund my money and I believe he will. Thanks again for the information. Harry |

Kinda off topic, but what is the mileage on your 300SDL, I keep seeing you are having problems with it.

Hi TB
The clock shows 108K. There were 5 or 6 items I repaired (mostly minor) right after I got the car and there are 3 or 4 more to do. The car has never idled right since I bought it in October and my problems came about as I tried for improvement. It looks good inside and out and is better on the road than any car I've ever been in. I really believe that the bearing that came apart and ripped through the IP housing was indeed my idle problem all the time. I say this because when I had the used IP from silver star running, you could almost set a glass of water on the hood and have it stay (almost);-). Are these IPs tough? With one of the balls from the bearing stuck halfway though the housing, some busted through and gone and some (plus races) mixing in with the IP cam. It started up and I drove it on and off the trasport trailer. Harry 86 300 SDL |

Harry rides again
It turned out that three something's jumped out of their track, I suspect it
took a big bump during shipping. There is a slotted attachment (my names, because I have no clue) for each valve attached to the rack. A slide ball rides in the slot as the rack moves, three were out. I made a go/no gauge to insure getting them back in the same spot, loosened the attachments, slid them down the rail until the ball lined up, slid it back against my gauge and tightened. Idles is smooth, veeery little smoke and it will get up and go. Thanks to all who helped. Harry 86 300 SDL |

Hey Harry, Great job! I'm glad you got the IP and I'm even happier that you got it figured out and working like it should be. Really that's what this forum is all about for me, all the shared success’s and failures comprise an enormous and invaluable whole.
My compliments on your courage and capabilities to venture into this IP and identify the problem and developed a solution. I am always pleasantly surprised when someone takes a chance like that and discovers new knowledge like you have. Congratulations and thanks for sharing your experience.

Well said Billybob
I really don't think I would try to own one of these 16 year old beauties without the sharing of infomation on forums like this.
BTW, I was not all that brave about going into the IP for a fix. I had the luxury of my ruined IP to play with. I opened it up, looking for a clue and found one. I was sure the lifters would be frozen with rust and in the up position so the cam could not reach them. So this morning, armed with my WD 40, I removered the side plate, ran the engine and everything was moving. When I spotted the disconnected control linkage, I practiced the repair on my junk before doing it for real. Harry |

Harry, what did you mean by this when you wrote:
"I made a go/no gauge to insure getting them back in the same spot, loosened the attachments, slid them down the rail until the ball lined up, slid it back against my gauge and tightened."? I trying to find/make something to lock the IP for installation on a OM601 engine, which is very similar and the same engine family as the OM603. Any ideas? Thanx, Jay 123

Someone gave me p/n 601 589 05 21 00 as the locking tool. It's supposed to cost ~$20.

Jay, I have never seen an OM601 engine and have no clue. The OM603-961 IP has a plug near the aft part of the IP, when its removed, the cam fly weight area of the cam can be seen.
There is a lug that looks like the end of a straight screwdriver that the the cam lock slips over and holds while the IP is being installed. If the crank is properly set and the lock is in place, timing should be very close. The go/no go gauge you asked about was a different situation. With the side plate removed, I discovered three of the control linkages disconnected. (these are my names for this stuff). To reposition the runners into the slots with out undue force, it was necessary to loosen and slide the slot brackets down the rail and back. All I did was fashion a guage out of thick plastic (actually a battery tote strap) to fit between the brackets, right and left of the one I was moving. This allowed me to return it to the spot on the rail that it left. Sorry I cannot provide more help. Harry 86 300 SDL |
