350SDL Engine Rebuild
My 91 350SDL with 215k miles has hit a roadblock...I found out that my engine has bent connecting rods. I talked to my mechanic and dealer about a rebuilt engine and it will come out to about $10,000 including labor. I've pretty much decided that i will go with the engine rebuild. I would like to know whether or not the rebuilt engine (which has a 4year/50k mi warranty) has the reinforced piston rods. I've already put in a lot of money into this car ($3,000) and I will continue to dress it up nicely, but i'm just wary about putting in the same engine...Thanks in advance.

I'll let those who really know for sure answer your question, but I'd have to think an engine from the dealer would have the improved rods.
But, Wow! $10K for an engine! The PO of my car had a factory crate engine put in mine and the total was around $7K with labor, but that was at an indie shop, so the labor was probably cheaper.( And a cheaper engine?)

I agree, $10,000 for just an engine is steep.
Some companies can build an entire new car and sell it for less than that. Of course its what I call a little piss ant car, but it is an entire car with a warranty more than 4/50,000. You might look for a non MB factory rebuilt engine and see what that costs. There aren't many bargains at a MB dealer. P E H |

$10000. is a lot of money to put into a 91 car with all that milage.
Hows the engine head, trans, air conditioning etc. You don't want to get into a money pit. The body should be perfect to put that kind of cash into it. There comes a time when you just have to cut your losses and move on. Maybe you can get away with just replacing the rods. |

I have a '91 350SD with replaced rods and a valve job. I have the old rods as proof! I have 190k and love the car. However, if I hit your $, I would probably find a clean '86 or '87 SDL. Search for this model, they did have some problems (lesser cost, however).
How did you discover your problem? How long have you owned the car? Usually, I heard that this engine failed between 50k-100k miles sometimes over. Never heard of 215k miles though... |

The dealership in Orlando is not the best place to have this done. Email me using the button at the bottom of this post and I'll put you in touch will my uncle. He lives in Longwood, is the current president of the Central Florida section of the Mercedes Club of America, and has owned 20 Mercedes Diesels. He'll point you in the right direction.

I second Rick Miley's comments. I would definately shop this problem around in the area. You may find a big variation in costs to do this, especially if you are basically talking about installing a "crate" engine. I know a shop in Daytona (look under the Shops recommendation forum) that may be able to help you out. This isn't the kind of problem where you need to bring the car to the mechanic to figure out what's needed. I would just pick up the phone and start calling and see who comes up with the most cost effective solution figuring in warranty etc.

If I were in Orlando with this problem I would trailer it to Steve at Continental Imports and turn it over to him. Just let him call you when it is done, you will be in good hands.

$10000 for a factory rebuilt engine installed is about par at the dealer....the Rebuilt longblock is $8600 alone and it does come with a complete 48 month 50K warranty from MB
Mine was done in 2000 by the local MB dealer(under warranty) The tech told me that the ere were many parts that were different in the set-up....rods,pistons and a very different cylinder head design.I have put about 67K on the new engine and all is good so far. The MB Zone rep has told me that they have never had a problem out of one of the factory rebuilt units....time will tell I guess ..but to chime in the earlier comment you might look at what the car is worth versus what the costs to fix are...something to consider although one lister has spoken about investing $7600 in an '84 300SD which to me spurs a value of the car/cost to fix question..
