Where can I get fluorescent dye for a/c system?

Do any of the popular auto supply houses carry fluorescent dye for r134 a/c systems? I went to our local auto supply house (Murray's) and all they had was a red dye formulated with stop leak. I don't want stop leak and I don't want red, I just want fluorescent dye. I also don't want to mail-order just for this one item.

I saw a kit with the black light at Wal-Mart. I think it was about $30.00 US.

Maybe you should consider watching EBay for electronic Freon leak detectors. They are awesome. Very sensitive.

I get 12oz. cans of r134a and UV dye at Wal Mart for $5.86 each.

I also saw a light and yellow glasses kit there for $12 and change.

Good luck,

FYI, I have access to an nice (and expensive) UV light used for magnafluxing. That's why I'm insistent on UV dye. Plus I checked the web and learned the horrors of using the red dye/stop leak kits. Thanks for the tips, I didn't want to be running all over town wasting gas looking for what I need.

Just one more piece of info. Although I buy the UV Dye at WalMart because it is cheap and readily available, I prefer the dye that I get from an independent parts house. It has 2 oz. of oil in the can so I am replenishing the oil that leaked out due to having a leak.

The downside of the dye/oil charge approach is that you have to make sure you get the correct oil type, ester or pag. It' in very fine print.

Replacing oil is not an exact science, but if you have a leak you need to put at least a little back in.

Good luck,

I just got back from Wal-Mart. They didn't have it. It's not the first time I couldn't find anything that other Wal-Marts have. Ours sucks. But they did have a whole wall of Interdynamics r-134 cans with sealer!! I'll try Napa or Autozone.

You need an injector of some sort to make use of the 1 oz. vial of dye.

Good luck,

I have this kit. Best deal I could find. Worked very well for me.

If you just want the dye, checkout other options on their site, such as:
