Previews?

In the classic mode of "Is this just me or is it something on the site" lately I've noticed that a preview of the thread text does not pop up when I mouse over the thread. This happens on my windows machine at my office as well as my Mac at home. Been happening for a couple weeks, I think.

Let me edit/amend this. As soon as I posted this just now, which meant I had to log in, now I can see previews. Does this mean that I must be logged in to see the previews? Often I just quickly scan things without logging in...
