230SL distributor question

I just completed a new head gasket install and upon starting the car it ran very rough. I installed new points/condenser/cap/rotor and had some improvement. When I set the dwell the point gap started to reduce down from .3 to .2 to achieve the 39 degree dwell. Idle is great, starting is good, but when I rev to 2000 rpm it starts to cut out. I checked the timing and it looks to be set at 4-6 degree BTDC. I was going to reset but am having a very tough time loosening the collar for the distributor. Can anyone give a rookie a little help in this area? Also I have approx. 3/16th of an inch play in my rotor-distributor shaft itself. Is this making a big problem? Any help would be appreciated as the hurricanes are gone and I'm ready to go play in my car.

thank you

Hi Dave,
I don't have the answer, but I belong to a group of about 800 Pagoda owners with plenty of expert advice for the rest of us. Check out www.SL113.org to join our club.

Good luck,
Tom
