1981 380sl high idle

I am helping a friend tune up his 1981 380 sl. We have done the fuel, oil, air and smog filters. Changed plugs, wires, cap and coil. The car runs very smooth, but whats happening is when I advance the timing to where the power feels good the idle climbs up to 1500. When I retard the timing the idle goes down to 800-900 and the car loses alot of power. Additionally when the idle is high and the vehicle is parked, the engine tends to get rather warm(not overheating) I'm guessing from lack of air flow through the radiator. I do not believe the car has a vacuum leak because it is running very smooth all the time reguardless of where I set the timing.

The short version of this story is how can I lower the idle speed so I can leave the timing advanced for power and the rpms lower for the running hot problem. There are link arms every where on the throttle and I dont have any idea what does what?

Thanks for any help.

They idle is electronically controlled by a relay and a frequency valve and can't be set or adjusted. Try a search, there are literally dozens of posts on testing and correction.

How does the idle control valve work? Is it serviceable? Vendors sure are proud of it.
