What mileage can I expect from a 1980 450sl

I understand that the 1980 had a different gear ratio than earlier sl's. I get but 14 mog intra community and 15 mpg on a freeway. Is this normal? Might I expect more mpg and if so, where should I start?

From my research the 1980 was suppose to be slightly higher than the prior years...but I agree with John...15 MPH is about right for a 1980. The 1980 rear axle ratio was 2.65, compared to 3.06 in 1979. The 1980 had 160 horsepower while the 1979 had 180. 1980 also saw the introduction of the 3 way catalytic converter.

Hello,

I average about 20 mpg out of my 1980 450. Has about 175k miles.
I calculated this on a full tank, mixed town and interstate driving.
Using castrol straight sae 40, k7n air filter, light on the gas with no a/c running.

It apppears that there is quite a spread on what I might expect, i. e., between what I am getting now at 14-15 mpg to 20 mpg that Marty is getting. I too am driving with a light foot and with no AC. I use DELO 10W-40 with no oil consumption. I've checked the tire pressure and advanced the timeing as far as I dare. If I advance it further, although there is no hesitation or pinging, when too far advanced it is more difficult to light off when hot.

gas mileage

My 1980 450sl w/85k miles consistently gets 15.5mpg in town (no A/C) and as high as 21.5 on freeway (62-65 mph). I did notice an improvement with Amsoil 0-30 wt oil. I think this is about as good as it gets. But I'd like to pull the cat off and see what difference that would make.
