Mary,

It's still your dream car, and you're about to get to stage 2. Though a 280 should be a more fuel efficent thing than a 560. Especially if you can find one with a stick shift and relearn how to use a clutch.

As for fixing the old one, a good mechanic and a donor 450slc should do. Now a good time to learn how to pull a motor?

Mary- I'm very happy with my '84 380SL, but others don't like that model. They say the engine is too small, but I get good mileage, 22-23 mpg. You might try a newer 560SL, which will look the same as your 450SL, or you might try a newer model, such as a SL300 or SL500. I don't know much about those models, so someone else will have to help. Before you buy, get an expert to check it out! Good luck, and drive in good health, Ned

560sl

There are others on this board who know more than I as to what to look for in a 560, but I will say it is a very good car and engine. More sophisticated than some other r107s ie ABS, ASR, air Bag, etc so there is potentially more to go wrong but there also will be fewer years of life on the car and it was certainely the pinnacle of the development of this model. I have a 1973 450SL, the opposite end of the spectrum.

Generally I'd say later years are best ('88 or '89), look for a clean body and interior and maintenance records. I'd say these are far more important than miles, but personally I'd take a peak at anything under 150,000 miles. Find one you like (with records) then get a PPI.

Nothing wrong with the 280SL Euro (if you can find one), I have a 280SE Euro and the engine pulls just as much as the 450SL (better than an '80 would). 380s are fine too but be certain it has the double row timing chain (OE on '84s and '85s, aftermarket upgrade on earlier ones).

Good luck.

Mary,

Knowing this, stay away from the euro cars, get the newest, nicest, lowest mileage 560SL in a color you love.

Pay extra to get just what you want. Spending extra money up front will end up being half of what you eventually spend on a car that needs a little TLC.

Remember, TLC means "Tons of Loot and Cash.".

After a week of the 560SL, you'll be saying "What 450SL?".

Jim
