560SL fuel filter

See attached. Does a copper washer go on both sides of the fuel line at the filter? I don't think I had one on the filter side when I took it apart and the EPC doesn't seem to show one there.

Yes, you need a copper washer on both sides to avoid leakage.
(See the other connections on your pic).

Ja. As I read the EPC, that washer is Quantity 2.

Okay, thanks guys. There was only one aluminum washer on mine. Maybe that's why it was seeping a bit. That's what I get for only looking at the picture in the EPC and not reading the text.

88 560sl fuel cluster removal & R&R instruction

Great thread and I just happened to stumble upon this. I would like to remove the fuel cluster on my 88 560sl to replace all the fuel delivery parts: 2 fuel pumps, fuel filter, fuel lines, etc, etc. My fuel cluster is really rusted and dirty so I can't seem to figure out which bolts/screws to loosen to take the entire cluster out as depicted in this thread. A picture would be really nice. Any additional tips on crimping the gas line would also help.

Don't re-use the existing washer when you take the fitting apart. Once compressed, the copper washers cannot be re-used without probability of a leak. Buy two, buy 20 and keep some on hand.

560sl fuel pump cluster/assembly removal

Where are the bolts that need to be removed for the assembly to come out? Any tips on which fuel hose to crimp to avoid gasoline spill, etc. More detail for this newbie the better. Do you also think the gas tank strainer should also be replace. If so how do you do that. I want to take this opportunity to replace all the fuel delivery parts under the car.

Then what you want to do is run the car as dry as you can. Then slit the lowest rubber hose, the one that is about 3" long and catch the gallon or two you have left in the tank. That way you don't have to clamp a hose that you are going to replace anyway. You're eventually going to have to drain the tank to replace everything. I'd remove the whole unit, take it to your workbench and replace everything there. It's much easier that way. It's also a wise thing to replace everything while you're in the area.

That's a great idea. I think I will do as you suggest. Thank you.

Not trying to sell you something (well maybe I am), but that hose that I suggest you slit is sold by the meter from Mercedes for about $55. I have some left from my job. You can have piece of it for $5 plus a buck for shipping. See http://sites.google.com/site/mercedesstuff/

fuel lines

Sokoloff. Sure. Please PM me with details. Also, do you recall which fuel lines and all the parts to purchase for a complete fuel delivery overhaul for my task?

I can think of the following:
-Fuel Tank Strainer
-Main Fuel line from the tank to Fuel cluster
-2 Fuel Pumps
-Fuel Filter
-Fuel Accumulator

Its the "other" fuel lines that I am bit hazy on. I guess one fuel line would be what you are referring to. I am also sorry to see your red 560sl's tragedy.
Thank you.

EPC online

Thank you rowdie. My luck, the site does not support Mac. Windows only.
