1990 sl hardtop

I recently acquired a 1990 500Sl. It has top hydraulic issues. I just had the top cover cylinders done by Dennis. I plan to go thru the whole top system. It currently has the hardtop on. How do you manually release the hardtop? The owner's manual tells all about manual operation of the soft top but is silent on manual release of the hardtop. Any suggestions are in order. Also, is there a generic hydraulic fluid that meets the MB spec?
