gas smell in trunk of 280SL

I have a 1985 280SL Euro ( 64K original) and am noticing some gas smell in the trunk which probably isn't surprising since everything related to the rear fuel/ vent lines are original. My questions are: I have the MB service manual for the 110 engine but it shows two diagrams, one for the 107.04 and one for the 107.02 and it looks like there is quite a difference betwen the two. My VIN is WDB 107.042-1A- 033428 so can I assume this car has the 107.04 fuel tank/vent/ fuel lines system?
Question 2: How big a job is this, I'm not as spry as I used to be so is this best left to a professional? 3: Can my local non MB shop with a pretty good mechanic do this ? 4: Briefly, what are the sequence steps to do this job? Since I'm sure many of you have accomplished this over the years I would appreciate any advise you may have for me.
Thanks, Desert

It's an easy but tedious job, mainly because of all the screws that hold the bulkhead in place. Once it's out, it's mainly just replacing lots of small hoses.

Unless.... like mine, someone put a screw through the plastic expansion tank.

Before you go to all that trouble though....
1. Try replacing the gas cap or at least the gas cap gasket... common issue.
2. Check closely for a tiny fuel leak in the fuel cluster area... too small to drip, but enough to add a little odor.

Took a little thinking about the 107.2 and 107.4 difference. Not my strong suit. The 107.042 is a 280SL 107.022 is an SLC. SLC would not apply to the 1985 model. All 280s are Euro/ROTW here in the U.S.
The EPC will provide the part numbers for the fuel pump package (lines, pump, filter, accumulator, etc.) and the expansion tank lines. Abiby's suggestions are the first things to try.

I had the gas smell in the trunk of my 83 280SL. New gas cap did nothing.

I removed the bulkhead and replaced all the cloth covered lines to the expansion tank.

Ta Da!

Um... Expansion Tank?

Thanks for the input and advise. I did replace the gas cap a couple of years ago and I will check for any obvious leaks. Based on what you all provided I may give it a go but will probably wait for a little cooler weather, we will hit 107 today here in the Tucson area and my garage is not air conditioned. Thanks again, Desert
