Hardtop Release - 380SL
I recently purchased a 1985 MB 380SL and I am having trouble removing the hard-top. The rear locking pin seems to be jammed.
I release the 4 pins, 2 in windshield header bar and 2 behind the doors. The levers for the rear release are placed according to the manual. The rear pin seems to release, but when the top is lifted the pin doesn't clear the trunk and appears to remain latched. There is movement and when the lever is reapplied, it pulls the rear pin and top back to a 'locked' position. Thoughts? |

With 2 helpers applying upward pressure to the rear of the hard-top, get into the car and slide a flat-blade screwdriver into the recess where the rear pin fits. With a little fiddling around you should be able to release the catch. Then you can adjust the linkages - there are rods and cables but I can't remember which release the pin and which release the scuttle panel.

Yeah, the hook is spring loaded so you shouldn't have any problem getting it unhooked off the locking pin.

Thanks to all!
I was able to work the release as stated and get the hardtop off. Looks like the cable is stretched as it wasn't moving the locking mechanism at all. Thanks ... Terry |
