560SL drive shaft removal
Hi,
Just recently purchased '88 560SL. I'm unable to remove rear section of driveshaft to change center bearing. I've got the front half out going forward past transmission. Cannot get clearance to go past differential. Do I have to remove bearing support housing? Tried unsuccessfully to search forum for answer. Couldn't find anything in service manual. Thanks in advance for any help. Pete |

I just happened to do mine last month.
I pulled the entire drive shaft (both halves) connected together including the center bearing which was broken loosed from the shaft but still bolted in place. 1. I had mine (1989, 560SL) up on the hoist. 2. Jacked up the transmission as far as I could get it 3. Pull both flex joints off 4. Pulled the entire assembly (One 1, unit connected together) out through the front past the trans. Do not try and force the center bearing through the tunnel. You have to line up and gently move forward. 5. Putting on the rebuilt/balanced unit was just the opposite. Flex joints on last. I don't know if it was just luck but it worked. Most articles I read state that it is pulled in pieces and back through rear end location. Best of luck Softball Paul |

Originally I tried the same as you to remove out the rear of the vehicle, Could not get it to work!!
- I did not have to undo the parking brake cable assm. - Undo the trans mounts and jack it up as far as you can. My center bearing was loose (Rubber) due to damage. Had to be real careful upon acceleration at stoplight, otherwise bang..bang...bang. Sounded like it was coming up through the floorboard!!! Fortunately I have access to a hoist. Not sure how practical it is on the ground with jack stands!! Let us know how it worked out. Regards |

Yes! Got the drive shaft out. It's a real tight squeeze, but managed to push it past trans. I'm working with floor jacks. I have a comfortable creeper to move around with, so it's not bad at all. Now to remove the housing and bearing,,,
Really appreciate the help! |
