car shipping suggestions wanted

I will need to ship my '76 450SL next summer from SoCal to Virginia. Has anyone shipped a vehicle before? Any suggestions, comments, concerns, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I personally have not. However, as friend at work collects classic cars and ships all the time. He has NEVER had any difficulties that I was aware of. I know he uses several carriers, but mainly uses and firm called Horseless Carriages here in the east. I am not sure if they are nation wide. I will try to find out more info if I see him. Our office hours vary so I do not frequently see him, but I will try to find out.

This February I used Intercity Lines to ship my E-55 from the East coast to Nebraska. They only use enclosed carriers and they were first class all the way. A plus was that their price was even better than a typical open auto transport. Check out their website for more info:

Auto transport from California

I used monza auto transport from California to Michigan. They were pretty good, it took about two weeks. Thier number is 773-617-1398 (Redondo Beach, Ca)

We had our XKE shipped from CA to VA this August. Used one of the
open truck transport companies rather than the closed trucks to save
a few bucks. Next time we would use one of the closed carriers. Have
heard from other classic car owners the Horseless Carriage company
is very reliable. Whatever company you use find out what liability
they have in case of any damage to your car.

Auto transport

I've used "Dependable Auto Shippers" out of Dallas, TX several times, they use enclosed for high $ cars and open for average cars. Great service and on time, good prices, do an internet search for their 800 phone number. Good Luck.

I had a horrible experience with a shipper that kept my car for 2.5 months. Put over 2k miles on it. He never left because he didn't have a full truck. Go to the dealer, for a good reccomendation. They have lots of experience in shipping cars and can give you a good reccomendation. SoCal to Virginia should cost about $800-$1000 for shipping.
