Exhaust Manifolds/Cats
Hi All
My 75 has leaking/rusting thru cats.I want to get rid of these and change the exhaust system to pre 1975. Will manifolds and pipes from a 1972-74 work on this car? Massachusetts does not require emission testing due to the age of this car. Thanks Bob |

Yes, but . . .
The earlier manifolds should bolt up to your engine; the earlier manifolds may or may not be the correct length to attach to your current exhaust system, however. Therefore, it might be advisable to get a whole exhaust system from an earlier SL - the alternative is to take the car (with earlier manifolds and later exhaust) to a muffler shop to have them connect the two.
Some shops may not want to be involved with this from a legal perspective. If you mistakenly told them your car is a '72, however, they should be okay with it (unless they check the VIN tags). The older manifolds won't have inports for air injection (if your car had that), so you might as well remove the air pump, too. To conclude, I'd like to paraphrase Nixon: "It can be done, but it would be wrong." |
