Was there ever a 500 with manual tranny?

Ive been starting to get used to my 500SL and am really happy with the cornering, acceleration and grunt of them. I have seen some earlier 320's with manual tranny on ebay, but I was curious if these rare manuals were ever in a 500? I could not imagine what a pleasure it woulc be to drive one of these...

No

The sales literature I have for different years suggests that neither the SL nor the S 500s have ever been available with manual transmission.

No, the only few types of 129's with manual transmissions were
the 300SL with the 103 single-cam engine (never made it to the US), the 300SL with the 104 engine, which did make it to the US (the only type sold here), and there were 2 different 280SL's made with the 104 engine (different types of injection, both were SFI engines), and they also made a SL280 with the 112 engine which was available with a manual transmission.
None of the V8's had a manual transmission option.

Thats a crying shame. I drove my cousin's M3 the other night, while it had nowhere near the torque the manual tranny made all the difference in the world. I could just imagine how bad ass my SL would be with a manual tranny...

Spinedoc, be careful what you wish for.

I bought a Toyota MR2 Turbo last year. Within a month, and after several traffic jams, I got flat out sick of the manual.

It sits in the garage uninsured waiting for good weather to arrive so I can sell it to someone, anyone. :p

The last V8/manny tranny combo MBZ ever made was the m116 3.5 engine bolted to either the 116 or 107 chassis.

I agree with CDNC about manual transmissions - they can get old quick if you encounter stop and go conditions. Besides, a 5 liter V8 does not really need a manual transmission - you get impressive grunt anywhere on the rev band.

That said, a manual v8 Sl would be a righteous automobile:p

I know I know, my last manual was my RX-7 close to 7 years ago, so I forgot how much of a pain a manual is. I have a daily commuter, but find myself commuting more and more with my SL and leaving the "commuter" car in the driveway, LOL.

Still, one can dream...

Hearing all this talk about the manual transmission just makes me love my 1980 gray market 350SL with 4 speed manual tranny. I wish it were a five speed, but four will do. It is a joy to own and drive. You might want to keep watch on eBay and the like (I bought mine on eBay) for a 107 V-8 stick. There's nothing quite like it.
