2004 C230K Sedan Engine Cover Removal
Hello again Folks. I've held off for a while asking this question fearing embarrassment, but I can't figure the darn thing out. I am trying to remove the engine cover on this car in search for the oil filter. I tried pulling up on it, but it doesn't want to come off with moderate effort. The cover on my ML430 pops right off. This one, is hanging on with dear life. Are there unfastenable clamps or screws holding this sucker on? Thanks. -Norm

your positive the oil filter is under the engine cover?
I ask because on the `02 C240 even though it has the plastic engine cover. the filter is exposed by being under a black round removable cap cutout in the plastic engine cover |

Hello Ethan. Actually, I'm not sure where the filter is :-). I'm trying to figure it out. I haven't crawled under the car yet to see if it's under the car. My C230K has a 1.8L supercharged engine, I believe the C240 has a six banger, but could be mistaken. So, the location of the oil filter may differ. When I asked my service advisor, he scratched his head and said, 'Uh, I think that the oil filter is under the car.' My ML430 has the filter on top, which makes it very convenient to change oil filter oneself. I'm still trying to figure out how to pull the top engine cover to keep it clean there. They are building in my neighborhood and I have to drive through a sand storm sometimes. -Norm

You should have the "271" engine. The oil filter is wedged up against the firewall on the intake side. You'll need a 27mm socket to remove it (push the wiring and hoses around it gently aside while removing the oil filter). There is no need to remove the engine cover until you do spark plugs (50,000mi/80,000km/4 years) as there isn't much under there.
I hope you're using Mobil 1 or equivilent for your oil change......

And to remove the engine cover just pull straight up on it! It is only held on by rubber gromets on the valve cover and plastic pins on the cover!

Thanks Alex and Jamie for the info. I plan to change the oil soon. I just went over 1000 miles, the break-in period. I have a friend who used to design engines for SAAB and recommended that I change the oil after the first 1000 miles of break-in. He said that's the period when things 'wear' into place. -Norm
