help identify engine
I bought a very nice 1977 240d for $200 a few days ago the man claimed it had no compression in one cylinder. I found the compression to be fine but the new rebuilt injector was not outputting any fuel at all. For many reasons I am sure this is not a 240 d motor IE there is a shock mounted at front of car that should go to engine but no where to connect it to engine. The car has an oil cooler but no lines to hook up to oil cooler and I can’t find any coming from the engine that has been capped. The radiator hoses have home made tie downs too keep them away from moving parts. The man I bought it from told me it was a 230 engine from a junk yard. The only thing I can find about 230d engine could not possible be this engine. I did find a plate on the engine that reads as follows.
Original Mercedes-Benz Tauschaggregat Teil-nr. 61501080 illegible looks like 00 then 88 Aggregate nr. 627402 Can any one identify this engine? Dave S |

My guess is the engine is out of a 220D. I can't find a reference to 615.010. All the ones I see are 615.91x. In any case the 615 family includes the 200D and 220D engines.

The teil # is the part number. I agree it is more than likely a 615 engine based on this, and if it made it's way from a US car, more than likely a 2.2 (220D, as the 200D wasn't offered in the US market). The story behind the 615010 is that this is a part number, not the engine number, so the "010" means parts group 01, (engine). Just like a 820 is Gp 82, for example.
You should be able to locate the stamped in engine number someplace, not sure where on the block it is. Gilly
