Air outlet function & lighting, center dash, "93 500SL

Please describe the proper use and function of the two pushbutton controls (one red, one blue)on the center dash air outlets. The owner's manual is vague at best. Also, with dash lights on, the red button is backlit, should the blue button be also? If so, how is access obtained to change bulb or button?
