Check Engine Light Not Working?

Hy to everybody,
I have a CLK 430 1999 and you guys helped me to fix some little problem.....thanks a lot.
Now i have a question, even if i can check my error code with my scanner and delete them my CHECK engine light NEVER come on even if i have a problem like MAF or a misfiring.........i tried to disconnect one coil for lig, start the engine and.........nothing.....even if i can see the code and after delete this.
I am afraid that in case of i will have some minor problem i will not see this....
may be the previous owner did somethingh with the dealer for disconnect this function?
Many thanks guys.
Alberto

Key on, engine off, all the lights should be on. Does the light work then?

I'd have to look at a wiring diagram, but I would check the fuses and verify alternator function. In older clusters the lights ground through the voltage regulator. Not sure on your car.
