85 380sl Timing chain just in the nick of time!!
My brother just got his car fixed. Timing chain was stretched bad, and there was a partly broken rail. It could have slipped the chain at any time.
It was just changed, and the car runs great. The alternator was shot, it was reversing polarity off and on randomly. He also had a brand new convertible top put on it. Its looking great now. The mech commented on how smooth his car runs. 170k on the odometer, and it drives great, almost like new. The interior is still in great shape as its mbtex, paint is pretty good, needs a little work though. My brother is still very pleased with his car, and plan on possibly buying a w210 E420/430 in the future, maybe even something a little better even. For those of you with any R107 SL, have your timing chains checked by your mech to see if you need to do it. A Good independent, can check it for a minimal cost and let you know how much stretch the chain has. My brother's chain job cost him a decent price, $500 I believe. A lot cheaper than doing a chain, rebuilding the head(s), and possibly other things. The car idles rock solid now and has power it didn't have before. Alon
